What is it?:
A "capo" is a rubbery clamp that is placed on the neck to change the vibration length of the strings.
It is used to raise the pitches of the guitar strings and allow the guitarist
to easily play in more difficult keys.
Two Different Types: flat and curved
There are two types of capo, flat and curved, to match the two families of guitar, nylon string and steel string
respectively.
Aside from having a wider neck than steel string guitars, nylon string guitars have a flat fretboard while steel
string guitars have a slighted curved fretboard. Using the wrong capo-type on your guitar will cause buzzing or
affect the intonation, requiring a tuning adjustment.
Four Different Styles: strap, spring, screw and
pressure
There are four different styles of capos:
1. Strap - (Elastic or Toggle) low in quality and functionality so I have not included them below.
2. Spring - (or Trigger) easy to apply/remove, are very functional and some are low profile.
3. Screw - low profile but require more time and energy for application.
4. Pressure - low profile but require more time and skill at application.
Suggestions:
Most capos come with a lifetime warranty.
Be wary of claims that a capo can be used on both nylon and steel string guitars.
I prefer low profile, simple-to-use capos; Kyser capos are a little to high-profile for me.
